Iceland Academy of the arts: Graduation project 2008.
My main goal was to bridge the digital world with ours and to bring a natural, organic feeling into the digital project. I created the bridge by using the viewer‘s motions to influence the graphics directly. His interactions and movements change the form in the image as it adjusts to his silhouette. The natural touch is then emphasized by simulating a pencil sketch.
A secondary goal was to entertain and surprise the viewers. By having the graphic simple but responsive to the viewer‘s motions makes him a really big part of the result. That makes him move in funny ways while he is exploring what effect he has – and that entertains others.
Behind the organic visuals is a rather technical setup. A camera behind the viewer feeds frames into a software that analyzes them, detecting movement. Movement is detected by constantly comparing the lates frame with older ones. The output from the detection is a frame where black means no movement and white means movement. That image is then fed into another software that simulates a pencil drawing either on the white or the black area.
